1. At the beginning of Lent

Today is the first Sunday of Lent. Lent is the period preceding Easter that in the Christian Church is devoted to fasting, abstinence, and penitence in commemoration of Christ’s fasting in the wilderness. It runs from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday and so includes forty weekdays. Lent is also called ‘quaresima’ in Italian or ‘ Carême’ in French, which mean ‘ forty days,’ derived from Latin*. (³¤­…)

1. Differentiation between two records

Today’s our reading passage has similar contents to Matthew6:9-13, which is often called ‘Sermon on the Mount .’ Luke’s record is called ‘ Sermon on the field ‘ in contrast because Luke located the scene on a field.(see Luke 6:10) Though Matthew’s description was better known, comparison between two should reveal us important points. 1. The calling of Peter

Today’s lecturing portion is Luke 5, the passage in which Jesus gives the twelves the call to be his disciples. Among parallel records, Mark’s might be the best known one. He wrote ; - As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.(Mark 1:16-18) (³¤­…)

1. People turned down the Good News

Last Sunday, we listened to co-pastor Mizuguchi’s lecture on the opening passage of Luke 4, which describes how people of Nazareth rejected Jesus.

Let us look back the introduction of the episode before continuing the reflection on the issue. Jesus had commenced the ministry in Galilee. His words and acts impressed strongly Jewish people of all around the region.
